CHALLENGE
SCORING

FOUR MAIN SCORING OPTIONS

ABSOLUTE SCORING:

Scores are calculated on a linear basis based on grade. Ex: V1=100, V2=200, etc.

RELATIVE SCORING:

The competitors’ score is directly related to their handicap (registered max grade).

Designed to allow all users to compete regardless of skill level, scoring is based off of the climber’s self-reported V-Max (a grade you can do in 5 attempts on a regular basis)

  • 100 points will be given for routes you complete at your V-Max grade

  • 10 additional points given for every grade above that

  • 20 points subtracted for climbs below your V-Max

  • Optional: 1 point will also be deducted for each attempt at a climb.

CUSTOM SCORING:

Allows the event coordinator to assign custom points to each climb. You must enter the point value on the climb within the climb information (similar to a tag) in Plastick.

VOLUME SCORING:

Each climb is worth 1 point, regardless of grade or climbers’ ability level. This type of scoring is ideal for community events, new climbers, or low-stakes challenges.

CATEGORY SELECTION AND SANDBAG DETECTION

Enabling auto-assigning of categories allows KAYA to automatically assign climbers into their appropriate categories by matching their registered max grade with the appropriate category’s grade range.

Auto-assigning also enables KAYA’s sandbag detection which automatically bumps competitors to the appropriate category if their performance exceeds their registered category. Disabling this allows the climber to choose their own category and relies on the event admins to handle sandbagging as well as category adjustment requests.

AUTOMATIC BUMP RULES:

Please do not share the below information with competitors, in effort to reduce the chances of manipulating scores and “cheating the system”.

The following happens automatically with auto-category assignment:

If someone climbs a grade 3 steps above their registered grade TWICE, they’re bumped up 2 grades below the sent grade.

Example: V5 handicap climber.

Climbs two V8s, then they get bumped up to V6.

Example: 5.10a handicap climber.

Climbs two 5.10ds, then they get bumped up to 5.10b

If someone climbs a grade 4 steps above their registered grade ONCE, they’re bumped up 2 grades below the sent grade.

Example: V5 handicap climber.

Climbs one V9, then they get bumped to V7

Example: 5.10a handicap climber.

Climbs on 5.12a, then they get bumped to 5.11c

These automatic bump rules also apply to Relative scoring challenges as well.
